I do not think this is true, at least for Hondas. I believe I saw
reports last year, when gas was around $4 a gallon, of people stopping
their engines at stoplights lasting just a couple minutes, and it made
a big difference in gas savings. I have a friend who tried this and
saw a big increase in MPG.

It seems to me that several vehcle manufacturers made cars that would
turn off the engine if idles for more than a set time, unless overrid
by the driver. That disagres with one of your ideas.

with older carburated cars, but fuel injection is far more efficient, and
the biggest problem with turning your car off in the drive thru lane is that
this is the time it decides to not start again (been there, done that).

Tip #6, follow on the freeway at least 3 seconds behind the car in front,
and watch 3 or 4 cars in front of him to see if anybody is putting the
brakes on, if so then lift off of the gas pedal and coast to where the
traffic stops. If the traffic starts moving again before you get there, you
get to proceed without stopping.

If the traffic is doing 70+ and you're following close, then you have to do
what everybody else does, and this might mean that you have to come to a
full stop for a couple of seconds. But if you are following at 3 or 4
seconds and notice that the traffic is stopping, you get to coast and in all
liklihood can resume without coming to a full stop. A bonus is that the
tailgating you gets to benefit from your slow and steady speed
changes, and this might be the difference in getting to work or getting your
bumper bashed in.

Tip # 7 (and probably the best), don't drive like a maniac speed demon. You
don't need to drive like the little old lady from Pasedena, but you don't
need to drive like Jimmy Johnson either. Roll on the gas and brake instead
of jab at the pedals. This will make your passengers more comfortable too.

Agree - shutting it car off in traffic could be a real safety issue.

From Transport Canada:
"AVOID UNNECESSARY IDLING: If you’re stopped for more than 60 seconds,
except while in traffic, turn off your engine. This has minimal impact on
the starter system, and idling for more than 10 seconds uses more fuel than
it takes to restart your vehicle. Unnecessary idling for 10 minutes a day
uses about 5 percent more fuel over the year."

It takes very little energy to start an engine. And the energy comes
from electricity from the battery, rather than directly from gasoline
(of course, the engine recharges the battery with the alternator). It
takes a lot less energy to turn an engine for 1 sec than 30 sec. If
one does this at every stoplight, though, the gasoline savings may
justify the cost of a new starter, however.

Many hybrids stop their engines at stoplights. But, the have special
starters that are more durable than regular starters.

What?

They operate under that condition on an electric motor and battery power,
and don't restart the gasoline engine until they get up to speed, or the
battery condition deteriorates. That's the whole point of Hybrid -- it can
go in Stop-N-Go traffic for many miles on the batteries. It does not care
that the stop is a traffic light or a pile-up on the freeway, all it knows
is that it isn't moving, or is moving slowly, and the batteries are strong
enough that the gasoline engine is not needed.

This has nothing at all to do with the premise that they are equipped with
more durable starters. They may or may not be so equipped, but that is not
