89 civic HB. no spark. not main relay or ignitor

I have a 89 civic hatchback 1.5 liter that has been sitting for about a
year.
Has no spark.
I resoldered the main relay just in case.
when I ground pin 4 of the ignition control module (ignitor) I get a good
spark from coil.
I have 11.7 volts at coil when cranking.
no signal coming from ecu to ignition module.
no error codes on ECU. no lights at all on it.
I dont have any wiring diagrams.

where to next?
How can I test the ECU?
Is there any jumper to force the ecu to flash anything to confirm it is
working?
thanks. Roy

Hey Roy

I have never dealt with an 89 Civic, but your rotor is indeed turning,
right? (just a sanity check to see if the timing belt might have broken -
you didn't mention it, but you probably checked it).

Also, was wondering if it could be the crank angle sensor? It should be
inside the distributor - probably a hall sensor. Not sure how to test those
without a scope because the levels are very low/fast and can't see them with
a voltmeter - static test may not mean much. Its signal goes back the ECM
and drives your ignitor. Perhaps make sure this sensor goes back to the ecm?
Also check to see if the wire from the input of the ignitor to the ECM isn't
broken?

My manual only goes back to 96, so unfortunately can't help you with a
schematic - maybe someone out there can help you with that.

Hope you find it soon.

Yes I need to check the pickup coils. After I posted I found a wiring
diagram of the distributor. It shows 3 pick up coils: cylinder, crank and
TDC.
shows to be 460 ohms. I'll check them tomorrow.
yes rotor turns.

Re: 89 civic HB. no spark. not main relay or ignitor

Typically, you'll need to crank up to 10-18 seconds before a code
is set, hopefully the starter is still in once piece. You might check
and see if the 'check engine light' goes on and off normally. You
can always hookup a sensitive DMM on these, likely a reluctor,
sensors and watch the AC readings for subtle changes...no changes
probably something wrecked in the distributor.

Re: 89 civic HB. no spark. not main relay or ignitor

coils read 400 ohms each. that sounds about right. there are 2 on this
car. the third pickup would be if it had fuel injection which it doesnt
have.
ECU???
I have a 15 amp fuse under the hood labeled ECU.
With ignition switch on, when I pull fuse and put volt meter across
terminals, where fuse should be, I read no voltage!.
I switch to amps and put leads across terminals I read 0 amps!
No load at ECU?
At fuse block it is a tan or yellow wire with white stripe and 2 silver
dots. I could not find a wire at ecu with those colors
Where does power to ecu come from?
Is there an easy test to see if it has power? some kind of selftest..
I need a wiring diagram. Anybody have one?

Re: 89 civic HB. no spark. not main relay or ignitor

Found the problem.

The dealer came thru with a wiring diagram for an '88 civic wagon. Close
enough.
There are multiple fuses to ecu.
In the under dash fuse block, fuse 14 (I forget what it was labeled but it
wasnt obvious) was missing. I guess the previous owner had removed it and
didnt replace it.
It is control power for the main relay AND feeds injectors and fuel pump.
without main relay pulling in, no power was passed to ecu( from fuse 2 and
fuse 37).
replaced 15 amp fuse and got spark. for a few seconds anyway.
then fuse blew again.

Ended up being a shorted fuel pump

Thanks for all who responded.
