89 Prelude clunking

When starting from a stop, it's clunking while accelerating.
When not accelerating, no clunking.

It's only at very low speeds, and is not confined to a direction. It
happens when turning either left or right.

I've been told CV joint. Is this accurate? Is it expensive to repair?

CV joint will have a ratcheting sound. Almost always in a hard turn at low
speeds.

I've been through enough CV joints after owning 11 Hondas

Re: 89 Prelude clunking

Thanks, G-Man,

It only happens when I have the accelerator pressed. When my foot is
off the gas, no matter how hard the turn (and I've tried some real
hard turns), no clunking.

Is this an expensive repair? Is it doable at home?

Re: 89 Prelude clunking

What I do is replace the whole axle assy. They cost about $100.00
each. It's a pretty straight forward job that can be accomplished by
an average mechanic. Get a Haynes manual and that will walk you
throught the axle replacement. The reason I replace the axle is
because there are 2 CV Joints per axle and if one is bad it's not long
before the second one will go.
