92 Accord EX-R - reconnect battery, starter starts to spin

K, My car died on me so I ended up getting it towed back to my house. After finding out that the battery was dead I proceeded to try and recharge it. The charge took and now I'm trying to reconnect it but as soon as I connect both terminals it looks like the starter starts to spin and whine. Will I require a new starter? Or is there something I might be able to do to stop it from going as soon as I connect the battery?

Sounds like the solenoid is sticking. Try the hammer trick from under
the car. Hit the starter a couple of good wacks on the metal case with a
good sized hammer.
May need to remove and test the starter if problem persists. bob

Thanx for the input Bob. I managed to disengage the solenoid and reconnect the battery however ....

Now when I turn the key it just makes a kind of humming noise and don't turnover or anything. Guess that means I need to replace the solenoid or starter, no?

You should first try buying and installing a new solenoid. If that does
not solve the problem--buy a new starter. If you have the lack of
funds--you should be able to buy a starter from the owner or manager of a
car junk yard.
Even if they don't have one in stock, they should be able to get you one
from another junk yard dealer on their computer network.

If you meant the humming of the starter motor, try observing the mechanics of
why it's humming. Is the gear not engaging the flywheeel? Is the solenoid
lever loose/jammed? You might want to fire it up outside and watch the
"flywheel catch gear" extends to it's potential.
