93 prelude piston in caliper wont compress
 

93 honda prelude S (non - vtec)

the break pads need to be replaced but a c-clamp wont push the piston
in to fit the new pads.. ive attached a hollow pole to the c-clamp
attachment but even more leverage wont make it budge... does this mean
i need a new caliper or is there a different way i can get the piston
into the caliper?

front caliper, right? if it won't push in easily, don't try. use the
brake pedal to pump the piston all the way out [use a hose clamp
immediately you have it free to prevent excess fluid loss] and
disassemble the piston/rubber assembly. clean it all up [do not scrape
chrome off the piston is you can avoid it] and reassemble sith genuine
silicone grease. [NOT silglide]

check out tegger's faq's for how to do this.

once done, the piston should push in with just thumb pressure. do it
with the bleed valve open until it's all the way in, then start the
bleeding process in the normal way. again, check out the faq's.

if it's a rear caliper, it needs to be screwed in. again, faq.

I had a 89 Prelude. I use C-clamp to push the piston back. I tried the same
thing on my 93 Accord, it won't move at all, almost break the c-clamp. When
I read the service manual, I noticed it described to use a pair of need nose
pliers to twist the piston and turn, and it worked. Don't know about the
prelude. But are you following the service manual?

I had a 89 Prelude. I use C-clamp to push the piston back. I tried the same
thing on my 93 Accord, it won't move at all, almost break the c-clamp. When
I read the service manual, I noticed it described to use a pair of need nose
pliers to twist the piston and turn, and it worked. Don't know about the
prelude. But are you following the service manual?

thanks jim beam.. it is a rear caliper.. i tried all day to push it in
with a c-clamp but im very surprised you say that i need to screw it
in... i thought i knew what i was doing... :oops:

i am following a chilton’s manual paul5.. apparently it doesnt tell
you just everything you need to know.. do you know of a better manual
that i should be using?

That's the mistake I made when I first encountered this sort of caliper on
the Subaru my son had. It had a parking brake on the caliper, and I think
that's why it screws in. It amazed me that no matter how much pressure I put
on it, it didn't give a bit <8^{
