95 Accord won't shift properly when cold
 

A friend of mine has a 95 accord with about 60k on it. When cold it won't
shift at about 25 mph, just keeps revving. Once it warms up its normally
fine. Its been getting worse. Took it too a tranny shop that said there is
nothing wrong with it. Anything to try besides changing the fluid? I have
heard replacing the EGR valve, will this or a vacuum leak cause these
symptoms?

I dont know much about automatic transmissions (manual are much easier to
understand), but since it is a hydraulic based system that relies on the
centrifugal force to force out fluid (the faster the engine turns, the more
fluid is forced out and the gears are switched)... I'd assume that changing
the transmission fluid will have a high likelyhood of solving the problem.
It makes sense that old transmission fluid would have lost some of it's
viscous properties, and wouldnt flow well at low temperatures. If you say
that once warmed up, the shifting is done correctly, then I am almost
certain that's your problem.

I agree with the poster that suggested that you change the transmission
fluid. If changing the fluid does not solve the problem, make another post
and mention that changing the fluid did not solve the problem. If you had
a EGR valve problem or vacuum leak--it's my guess that the problem would
always be present even when it was not really cold.

Thanks for the responses, pretty much what I guessed. I found out another
detail today. The person that checked out the transmission was the same guy
that has worked on it before. Previous problem unknown. Since he is in a
small Oklahoma town his qualifications are somewhat in question...sorry,
just experience speaking here!

I have an old Dodge truck that had a screwy EGR valve. Ran like crap when
cold, fine when warm. Go figure. I think it had gunk in it that softened
when warm.

Is there a filter to be changed in these transmissions?

detail today. The person that checked out the transmission was the same guy
that has worked on it before. Previous problem unknown. Since he is in a
small Oklahoma town his qualifications are somewhat in question...sorry,
just experience speaking here!

I had chance to check out the Accord in question today. It appears my first
impression of being concerning about the Okie mechanic was right. The
transmission with "nuttin wrong with it" had dark brown fluid :( . Going to
have the tranny flushed and see how it goes. It also has a pretty good
sized leak. It occuring on the right hand side of the car, behind the
engine. The black brace was pretty well covered with fluid. I would guess
this is a leaking axel? Anyone know of a good Honda shop in Tulsa?
