96 Honda Accord Lx transmission slipping
 

I have a 96 Accord LX with automatic transmission. Has 4 cyl and 115K miles
on it. Drained and replaced the trans fluid 1 1/2 months ago with Honda
auto trans fluid. Tonight while driving home city/highway it would not go
faster than 30 mph (3k rpm's) and prior to this some major slipping like the
clutches were not biting into anything (rpm fluxed with no increase in
speed)or had no trans fluid in the transmission. After the slippage the
engine lite came on. The fluid is at the proper level and does not smell
burnt. Any ideas?

The engine light gets my attention - once you know what that's about you
will be closer to a definitive answer. The tranny is electronically
controlled and the problem could be electrical. A friend of my wife has a
Buick and the engine light turned on when she stopped at a light. As she
pulled away the speedometer read 0 and the transmission was stuck in low.
The problem: failed vehicle speed sensor. What gear should the transmission
be in if the speed is 0?

Since you didn't mention any speedometer weirdness I'm guessing the problem
isn't the speed sensor, but it could still be electrical; bad alternator
diodes, intermittent connection in the battery, loss of the engine ground (I
think yours is the same as our '93, a braided wire from the front of the
valve cover to the frame near the radiator). But we really need to know what
the code is that is turning that light on.

If the CEL is still on, take it to someplace like Trak Auto, Autozone, etc.
and have them hook a code reader to the OBDII port and get a number. This
will help.

This morning reverse worked fine and that was the only gear that worked.I
ended up calling the transmission place to pick it up.
