98 accord tranny replacement question
 

I know there are a million posts about this so I'll keep it brief.
The tranny in my 98 Accord EX V6 is on its way out (worsening slipping) and
AHM has agreed to replace it for $1500 all inclusive as opposed to $4500 +
$1000 installation. Kudos to Honda.
My question to those of you who have had theirs replaced and I'm sure there
are many of you:
I would just like to know how the Honda reman tranny is compared to the
original (before it was toast), in such areas as reliability, shifting,
smoothness etc.
Honda warranties the replacement for 3/36 so I'm comfortable with that.

the remans are fine. they're fully gone through, then tested
afterward. i've installed a bunch of them, haven't got a bad one yet.

AHM = American Honda Motors... basically your local dealership (if in the
US)

I have a '99 V6 and same thing. Mine was replaced at 68k miles. I had to
pay for the labor and AHM paid for everything else. I rented a vehicle for
two days as well, so add another $70, but not bad since I now have a new and
IMPROVED factory tranny, Honda installed for ~US$580 total.

The NEW transmission is better than it ever was, even when my vehicle was
new. Very smooth, powerful, shifts in the correct spots... just like it
should've always been doing!

I don't think the warranty is 3/36, more like 12/12 or 12/18. I may be
wrong, but if so, make sure you get your 3/36 warranty in writing.

corporate headquarters on Torrence, California.
Keith, I'm optimistic to hear how satisfied you are with the new tranny. As
was yourself, my tranny on my 98 NEVER seemed right. It was never smooth and
always shifted rough. I thought that was that way it was since this
transmission is essentially similar to a manual gearbox with automatic
clutchpacks and electronic controls.
Wow, only $580 for yours....nice deal. Maybe mine was more as it is a 98.
The Honda "case manager" assigned to my case was very pleasant but specific
in that the $1500 was non negotiable.

Could be that Honda was getting taken to the cleaners by people like me.
Mine was replaced in Tallahassee, FL, so it was by Honda Southeast district.

This all happened last spring. What was weird was that I explained my
problem to the Tech writer, who immediately got the service manager and off
we went on a test drive. I was passenger... it doesn't seem right sitting
on that side in MY car! :) I told him that my trouble spots were around 30
mph and under. Basically it wouldn't shift down at the right spots and
clunked into the lower gears. A few times up and down around 30 mph and he
said that this is a known problem, but since my vehicle was not covered
under the warranty extension like the '00, everything was out of his hands.
He said that he would schedule time for me with the regional guy.

I never got to even see him, just the service manager called a few days
later and told me the deal that they would do for me. Sounded fair to me
because if they were not going to cover anything, I would've detailed it and
then traded it in for a new Ford Escape V6.

Honda needed my vehicle for two and a half days. Really two days, but I
wanted my car to sit there overnight for them to check for leaks the third
morning before I showed to pick it up.

I'm happy and sad at the same time. the Escape would've been a nice
vehicle, oh well. still have a GREAT car.

clunked into the lower gears. A few times up and down around 30 mph and he
said that this is a known problem, but since my vehicle was not covered
under the warranty extension like the '00, everything was out of his hands.
He said that he would schedule time for me with the regional guy.

I never got to even see him, just the service manager called a few days
later and told me the deal that they would do for me. Sounded fair to me
because if they were not going to cover anything, I would've detailed it and
then traded it in for a new Ford Escape V6.

Honda needed my vehicle for two and a half days. Really two days, but I
wanted my car to sit there overnight for them to check for leaks the third
morning before I showed to pick it up.

I'm happy and sad at the same time. the Escape would've been a nice
vehicle, oh well. still have a GREAT car.
