Burnishing Clutches in Rear Differential
I have a 2006 CRV with 30,000 miles. Some time ago we began to notice
a 'noise' in the rear end. This noise was heard at low speeds when turning sharply. The noise steadily got louder and we took it to the dealer for diagnosis. They said there was a Service Bulletin out requiring a fluid in the rear end be changed every 30,000 miles and this would take care of our problems. They did so under warranty and it indeed did fix the noise. I noticed on the Work Order that they also 'Burnished" the clutches in the rear end. The reason for my question is that my daughter also has a 2006 CRV however she has 80,000 miles on hers and the 'noise' has progressed to a 'click' and maybe a little jerk when the vehicle is turned sharply. Of course hers is out of warranty. Her husband, who is a diesel mechanic, called the dealer and discussed their problem and they said to change the fluid, drive it a few miles, and change the fluid again and this should take care of their problems. They mentioned nothing about 'burnishing the clutches'. Am I correct in assuming that driving and turning forcing the clutches to work will 'burnish' them? Also, since there is no mention of this fluid change in the Warranty Book, do you suppose that if further work is needed that they might cover that under warranty? Thanks for any information on this subject. |

TSBs aren't like recalls. They don't even have to tell you about them. In fact, if it weren't required by law, "they" wouldn't let you know about them at all. |

I think driving and turning will eventually burnish the clutches, just not within 5 minutes the way the TSB does it (jack up the car and run it with the wheels off the ground). The best solution overall is to remember at what mileage the noises started and change the fluid before it gets to that point the next time so you don't have to do any burnishing. TSB is a Technical Service Bulletin. They are simply improved or changed maintenance procedures provided by the manufacturer to the dealers. They have no warranty implications one way or the other unless the manufacturer also includes some warranty guidance with the procedure. With regard to your daughter's '06, look a little harder at the service schedule. You will find a reference to changing the dual pump fluid at 60,000 miles in the "severe" schedule. |

I don't recall the address but it is Honda Service Bulletin 07-024 DATED October 3, 2007 We changed the oil and 'burnished' the clutches which consisted of: Putting crv on Jack Stands so all 4 wheels are off the ground, start engine and let idle until radiator fan cycles on and off two times, turn off VSA, apply parking brake, shift into reverse, let engine idle for 5 minutes, shift into drive, remove parking brake, run 5 minutes at 10 mph. Repeat the sequence and then shift into park and turn engine off. Let cool for 10 minutes, then drain and refill differential a second time. Each fill takes 1.3 quarts (about 42 ounces) so you will need 3 quarts to change two times. While we were doing all this, my son-in-law kept saying 'I don't see how changing the fluid can fix it' but it did. We took the car out and it seems to be completely ok. The only 'downside' was the fluid was $12.00+ per quart however that was much less than a differential replacement! Honda did mine NC @ 30,000 miles but didn't offer to do anything about my daughter's @ 80,000? Warranty was 60,000? |

Ours would probably be considered 'severe' because most of our driving is short distances, etc and we had problems @ 30,000 miles? Although the daughter has' driven the wheels off hers' much of her driving is trips of 40 miles or so and hers didn't give problems until about 70,000 or so. Go figure? I'll take your word on the 60,000 mile change, I must have missed it. Thanks again |

Warranty was 60,000? No, warranty was 36,000, severe service schedule is 60,000. My '06 needed it done at 29,000 & the dealer did it without a whimper and gave me a copy of the TSB as well. I'm thinking I'll just buy some fluid and change it myself at about 58,000 & see if I can stay ahead of it. |

It also says that the rear differential and all interior parts are a part of the Powertrain? From that I think we can let Honda do ours again if we have a problem before 60,000 miles. It really wasn't that bad of a job if you have to do it yourself. I just hate to pay $12.00+/quart for the fluid and from what I can find there is no 'generic' equivalent. |
