Can I mount the infant carseat in 91 Civic 3dr DX NOT in the center of the rear seat?

I have recently installed a Graco carseat base in my 91 Civic. I do
not have the Owner's Manual for the car but it appears that I can only
install the base in the center of the rear seat. My preference was to
actually install it on one of the sides but I am not sure whether this
is possible. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Konrad

Tracy - thanks for sending the link. Unfortunately, the 1991 Civic
and Graco Snagride combination is not listed there.

What I meant is that this:
(1) there are no manual latch locations on the back seat = I cannot
use the latch to mount the car seat
(2) Graco instruction manual says that lap/shoulder belts with
retractors (=1991 Civic) cannot be used to mount the base.

The next logical step would be to look up Operator's Manual but I do
not have one. Accordingly, it was more practicable to ask the
newsgroup readers than to buy the manual.

Re: Can I mount the infant carseat in 91 Civic 3dr DX NOT in the center of the rear seat?

Konrad,

Get the Owner's Manual (OM)!

Every car owner should AT LEAST have an OM.

I have a '95 Nissan...in my OM, it shows HIDDEN car seat attachment
points in the rear seat area as well as how to access and "enable"
them. I suspect your OM would show the same information. I got mine
just recently from Nissan (a beand new OM for this '95 200SX SE, for
only $12 shipped), but they also can be found on EBAY. Maybe Honda
does the same for older cars.

Whatever, get the OM.

Good luck,

John D.

Re: Can I mount the infant carseat in 91 Civic 3dr DX NOT in the center of the rear seat?

Konrad,

Well, you certianly are right about that -- and I agree completely --
but don't get me started on all the OTHER problems here that I
hate...like moral decline, PC/NWO/liberal-socialist domestic agendas,
flawed/unjust foreign policies (mostly just a waste of American
TAXPAYER money damn it!)...the list goes on! And I've MOSTLY been
raised here, except I've lived in Europe for 7 years and went to Asia
(Viet Nam)...I don't like our present condition one bit but
apparently, most "Americans" are in agreement because it goes on
nonetheless. Disgraceful.

But back to your situation...

The Honda Owner's Manual (OM) you ordered (I assume it was the OM
because you aren't going ot get a Honda factory-authorized shop manual
for $24) will tell you LOTS more than just how to mount the child
seat...you'll be pleased you got it I'm sure...a good investment for
your car, long overdue.

Glad you were able to find one so easily...especially for a 1991
vehicle. I was VERY surprised Nissan Publications had a NEW OM for my
1995 200SX SE...the ones on Ebay are usually used, dog-eared or in
poor condition and/or have writing all over them.

Regards,

John D.

We could really start a new discussion here and I would likely agree

Thanks again for your suggestion on the OM. I ordered a new one from

Re: Can I mount the infant carseat in 91 Civic 3dr DX NOT in the center of the rear seat?

Thanks Tracy. You are probably right on this. I have had bad
experiences with the quality of service rendered by Honda dealers in
the past. On the other hand I would think that answering a simple
question whether it is possible to mount the carseat on the side of
rear seat rather than just in the center should be within the
competence of a dealer. If they said "yes", I would have gone and
purchased the Operator's Manual. If the answer was "no" I would have
not spent the money. That is all I expected from the dealer. At this
point, I purchased the OM anyway and it should arrive any time now. I
was busy and could not explore the links you sent but will do so.
Thanks again!

Re: Can I mount the infant carseat in 91 Civic 3dr DX NOT in the center of the rear seat?

Knorad,

EVERY car owner should have AT LEAST an Owner's Manual (OM),
regardless of whether or not it covers only one particular issue or
not.

Don't be so short-sighted/limited in your thinking or in your
assessment re: an OM's value...it's worth lots more than you seem to
believe.
