changing oil questions!
I am going to change the oil of my civic 2001 manual, I bought 4 litter of
"MotoMaster" Supreme 10w30 SAE. My questions, is this good oil? How much do I need, 4 L is enough or I need more. I also bought a drain pan which take 8L, is that enough? I do not want to oil flood in the drive way :) Also I bought a MotoMaster filter (PH7317), is this good? |
Re: changing oil questions!
Read the manual for the type of oil specified for the temperature conditions

Hi,
Did you even check under the hood for the amount and type of oil you need. Also did you buy a filter wrench? Re: changing oil questions!
To summarize :
You will need: 1. The recommended oil (rely on the manual or someone experienced with oil change who has the same car you have) with the required Qty. 2. Oil filter 3. Oil filter wrench 4. An drain pan or a plastic tray to collect the old oil from the engine. 5. A wrench to open the engine oil compartment to let out the old oil. (keep a set with common sizes) 6. a set of ramps ( if you dont have anything to elevate the car, so you can go underneath it and remove oil and change the oil filter.) Dont use jack to elevate the car as it is very dangerous to do so. If you are in the US you can go to Walmart or PepBoys, they have all the stuff required to change the oil. Also dont forget to bring the drained oil to PepBoys or some auto repairer and dump it in their hazardous waste drums. well I did the oil change first time on my own and so thought these tips might be useful, experts are welcome to correct me, if I am wrong in any poin or pour in their suggestions "lastnn30" <lastnn30@yahoo.com> wrote in message news:dQvWa.22124$4UE.18868@news01.bloor.is.net.cab le.rogers.com... > I am going to change the oil of my civic 2001 manual, I bought 4 litter of > "MotoMaster" Supreme 10w30 SAE. Re: changing oil questions!
No, you BUY them...they are very inexpensive.
Go to your local AutoZone, Pep Boys, K-Mart, WalMart, Checker, Kragen, Sears...lots of places have them. Get at least TWO to hold up either the front or rear of the car (one at each corner, front or rear of car), or get FOUR jackstands if you plan to have the whole car up (2 in front, 2 in rear). You just jack up the car at each corner -- using your supplied car jack -- then put one jackstand close to where the jack was, then move on to the next corner and repeat the process. Just be sure to place the jackstands under a solid FRAME part of the car and not the FLOOR so you don't damage anything. Good luck, John D. The idea is you jack the car up, place the jackstand(s) and remove the jack. I'm guessing to change the oil you'd do both left & right sides in front to provide access (IIRC, also removing the l/front tire provided terrific access on my '88 Integra). Jacks, especially those supplied with new cars, are not safe enough for you to work under the car held up only by the jack. I haven't bought them since the 80's, but they're not very expensive. AFAIK no one rents them. If you're going to do a lot of maintenance, I'd recommend a hydraulic floor jack (like the ones you see in service dept's & tire stores). They're much better than flat tire jacks and you can lift the front with one motion instead of two. Raise the back, place 2 more jacks and rotating your tires is a snap. |

As for weight it should say on your oil cap, if it says 5w 30 id use that. i have a 97 prelude VTEC and thats what it calls for... As far as filter that filter will work but its not as good as a honda filter, honda filters are awsome and there also cheap,, if you want anything else go to K mart or something like that and get a fram filter or a moble filter. |
