Cost of complete timing belt job??

I have a 90 Accord 4cyl with 95,000 mi. I was just quoted $900 for the
complete timing belt job. It included all of the belts, water pump,
bearings for the balancer, an oil pump seal and some other its and
pieces. This was an independent shop recomended by Bucky in Sunnyvale,
CA. This sounds very high. What whould I be expecting? The same guy
quoted $130 for a valve adjust. He had a 2 week backlog and didn't
seem to be hurting for work.

Ask him to break it out.

Then call some Honda dealers and get quotes. Balancer bearings and oil
pump seals aren't in the general quote that dealers give; they'll quote
belt/water pump/drive belts.

I think it's high, but maybe not with whatever extra work he has figured
into the quote.

But then again, some people quote high just to turn you away. If they
don't want the work, you don't want them to do it.

Sounds like a reasonable price for that list of work in the Silicon
Valley area. Unfortunately our shop rates are around $100/hour here :(.

That sounds WAY too high. Do you really need to replace the oil pump seal and
some of the other stuff? I have an '88 Accord(which still runs like a champ
at 239,000 miles) and I've only replaced the water pump, belts, and tensioner
pulley during timing belt change.

For a comparison check out Matta Motors(www.mattamotors.com) which is located
outside of Pittsburgh. They've been a Honda specialist for over 20 years and
their rates are more than reasonable....just use them as a guidline since I
know you live on the West Coast. IMO, $900 sounds excessive. I've always
done the job myself and the parts alone set me back $100-$130.

Well, I just checked and Matta Motors only charges $390 plus tax for 90-97
Accords.....that's some difference.

That is a very big difference. the SFO area is always a little more
but that is a bunch. I really don't feel like doing it my. This shop
must have included every part possible. I will have to look around at
other shops and the dealer as well. At least now I know the top of the
range in my area.

Thanks all Bob

$900 is a massive rip-off. When I had those items replaced on my '93
Accord, the total cost was about $400.
