First oil change for 2003 V6 Accord

I just went to the honda dealer to get my first oil change. I have 3100
miles on it. The service guy said this was way too soon and that I should
wait until 7500 miles because Honda uses special break in oil. I didn't
think this was true of any car these days. Anyway, I did not get it changed
yet. Does anyone know if this is true about break in oil? Should I really
wait until 7500 miles? I don't want to damage the engine.

You should leave the oil in there until 7500 (or whatever your manual
recommend). Honda does use a break in oil.

He is correct...Honda does use a special break in oil and it seems like
5,000 miles is about the time to change it....I changed mine at 4100 a year
and a half ago. There are other valid opinions, depending on the vehicle
usage as well. But 3100 miles is too soon. My dealership uses 3750 miles
as their recommended interval thereafter.

I too have an '03 v6 w/ ~4k on it. I think I did read somewhere (owner's
manual?) that the 1st oil change shouldn't be too soon. I checked the oil
level frequently during the 1st month. I noticed there was almost no color
to the oil -- "breakin oil"? I think the dealership also sells some sort of
special for-Honda manufacturer's oil that also has no color.

The dealer is right about the first oil change taking place at 7500 miles.
However, after that oil change--I believe you should change it every 3000
miles. The filter should be changed at the same time the oil is changed.

Re: First oil change for 2003 V6 Accord

Have car manuals gone the way of computer manuals? Besides a lot of
required safety and emission information (important but not the
subject here), there's good information about operating and
maintaining the car. Many of the questions I see here are in fact
covered in the manual ... including this one.

I believe the manual is pretty explicit about the break-in oil and
recommended change intervals. As I recall it is quite emphatic about
not doing the first oil change too soon. Seems like an easier and more
reliable way to get this information than driving to the dealer or
asking a group of people who may or may not know.

Re: First oil change for 2003 V6 Accord

The 2003 Accord owners manual says only to change the oil at the recommended
intervals (3750 or 7500 miles). No where does it say honda uses "special
break-in oil, do not change until 7500 miles." I like to follow the severe
schedule, yes I was a few hundred miles short of that but thanks to the
service advisor and the people who replied to my message I know to leave the
break-in oil in until 7500 miles. The manual is not very clear about this.

Re: First oil change for 2003 V6 Accord

Sorry, my earlier note sounded pretty rude. Gruppy today, I guess.

There is a Break-In section of the manual that has three bullets, the
last of which says do not change the oil under the recommended time or
mileage interval shown in the maintenance schedule. I thought it
mentioned break-in oil, but I guess my sales guy said that.

Re: First oil change for 2003 V6 Accord

I too was/am confused. I spoke to a Honda dealer who said that there is
no longer any break-in oil used; the manual however does imply that you
should not change the oil too soon. ?? I would like to see a once and
for all definitive and authoritative answer regarding this.

Separate question- what harm, if any, if, using the 5w-20 recommended
oil, you run at 5000 rpm for 20 minutes or so, and outside temperature
is 100 degrees Fahrenheit?? Can you damage the bearings? Does the oil
boil away or 'burn'???
