Are genuine Honda alxes that much better than aftermarket?
I am looking at buying a new axle for my honda, the cv joint is shot to . Anyways, is there a difference between the two replacements, genuine honda or aftermarket? Or was the mechanic just trying to sell me something pricier? TIA, doeboy |

Guess where the companies that remanufacture axles get theirs to remanufacturer. Right! They use the old OEM ones that come off of the vehicle when the swap is made. So, by-in-large, you have an OEM shaft, cans and stub axles with new (non OEM) bearings, cages, boots and clamps. You shouldn't notice any difference. For what it is worth, the NAPA store here in Fairbanks, AK used to give a lifetime warranty on their reman axles (incl the boots). I don't know if this is local policy or nation-wide. Another option is to get one off of a junked vehicle. Many of the car junk yards are now on a special computer network and can get you what you need even if they don't have one in stock. In many cases, they will even guarantee the axle--they just replace it with another one. |

What I received was GKN brand axle. Now, GKN is an oem for several makes including Toyota but this was the first time I had seen one for a Honda. The parts guy I spoke with at Majestic Honda was surprised as well but assured me that Honda would back the axle with the same warranty. However, I mentioned that the boots for this axle was quite different from Honda's earlier style and they couldn't tell me if they were going to be carrying boots for these new axles. I hope that this situation has improved since I last inquired about it. Incidentally, the axle has performed without any problems so far. If you want to save some money, you could look for a GKN rebuilt axle. It may be the case that these are offered at other outlets in addition to Honda. Eric |
