Some of the new base oils are "Type II" or "Type III" - AKA "hydroisomerized" or "hydrocracked" petroleum oil. There's been some controversy over Castrol NA changing their motor oil from mostly PAO (Type IV) to a Type III base oil, and marketing it as "synthetic". <http://www.oilhelp.com/about.htm> Texaco Havoline motor oil was labelled as "Type II" during the Shell/Texaco joint venture (Equilon). Chevron called their base oil IsoSyn, which is a Type II base oil they used in Chevron Surpreme and Delo motor oils. I believe Chevron also patented the process. Since the Chevron/Texaco merger, they likely use the same formula in different color bottles. <http://www.chevron.com/prodserv/nafl/auto/content/promotions.shtm> |
