mini survey: Honda Civic 5-year repair costs
 

Hello listers,

I hope you may help me by laying your hands on this mini survey.
Basically I want to figure out whether it is worthwhile to purchase
the extended warranty for Honda Civic. My 03 Civic will hit 30k miles
in one and half year after its purchase. If at that moment I am to buy
a bumper-to-bumper wear and tear plan for 5 years/100k miles with $0
deductible, the premium will be $1,000 or so. It will pay the cost to
repair or replace any part of the vehicle where a failure has
occurred, EXCEPT for those items listed below:

Battery; tires; wheels/rims; exhaust and emissions systems; shock
absorbers; friction clutch disc & pressure plate; throw out bearing;
manual and hydraulic linkages; safety restraint systems; glass;
lenses; sealed beams; bulbs; brake rotors & drums; TV/video/game
systems; weather strips; exterior body parts/ornamentation; paint;
upholstery & carpet; phone systems.

I figure out that if in five years, my repair/replacement costs for
items NOT listed in the EXCLUSION list are more than $1,000, then it
is worthwhile to buy the extended warranty now. Since it is my first
car, I do not know how much I might be spending in repair/replacement
in the first several years on a Honda Civic. If you have owned the car
for a while (not necessary 5 years), can you let me know how much the
cost is for you? I appreciate a lot if you can distinguish between
both the cost for the items in the exclusion list and those are not.

I've owned 2 93 Civic Del Sol's, an S and an Si, and have a 94 VTEC Del Sol.
My TOTAL cost of repairs (parts and labor) above and beyond normal wear
items has been about $1300 in 9 years. I don't know if the stuff would
have been covered or not - clutch, timing belts, batteries and master
cylinder work. I do my own brake pads, plugs, wires, oil, filters, fluid
changes, etc, etc - the easy stuff. Beyond that fact, Extended Warranties
are a crap shoot. You have to be very adamant with the dealers and have all
of your documentation in order before they really come across and honor the
terms of the warrantees. Lots of fine print and outs for them. Take the
money you want to waste on the extended warrantee and put it in a bank
account to be used for emergency repairs - you will be better off.

I just sold my 95 Civic and bought the 2004 model with no extended
warranty.
Never had any repairs. Just standard maintenence: tires, brakes, oil,
oil filter. Changed spark plugs twice myself.

You will find that extended warranties on almost everything is not
worth it "in the long run". Appliance dealers make more money on
warranties than on the product.

Warranties are a gamble. Most people lose. At $1000 every 5 years you
will pay $12000-$15000 in your lifetime. That's a lot of repairs.

It was funny that when the dealer tried to sell me a warranty on my
Honda he showed me a repair bill for A/C repair for $1200 ON A FORD.

Probably not.

Personally I never got anywhere near driving 100,000 miles in 5 years, but
if your driving habits are average, and you use common sense and look after
your car, and if so far you did not have any repairs necessary under
warranty - the chances of something worth over $1000 breaking down in your
Honda by the time you hit 5 years are close to nil.

Look at it this way: The car has no big manufacturing defects - you would
detect those long ago. The engine and transmission are covered to 3
years/36K miles. The car is practically new. There simply isn't anything in
the car that would cost over $1000 to fix at this point.

Well i am one of the few that has definitely gotten my money's
worth out of my extended warranty. Why did I buy it? Well I went
from a 1985 Nissan 200SX POS with 350000km on it to a brand new
car, and decided I didn't wanna have to worry about anything.

It extended my warranty from 5yr/100000km to 7yr/160000km.

The only difference between my experiences and others, is that
I found my dealer to be very easy to deal with. They would
volunteer to do warranty work, even after the 100000km mark.

Work I had done on Warranty:

Fuel Tank - 40000km - $500 (Don't know why this
was warranty, since I'm pretty sure I hit something on the road
that dented the tank, but hey, I wasn't gonna argue)

CV Boots - 85000km - $350

Exhaust Manifold - 135000km - $800

Transmission Input Shaft Bearing - 168000km - $400 (Yes thats right, they
did it after the mileage was over. I didn't even have to pressure them)

Oh yeah, and while they were inside the trannie they did:

Release Bearing - $70
Pressure Plate - $200
2nd gear - $300
3rd gear - $450
a crap load of other stuff - $800
labour - $1000

I did end up paying $200 as well, for the clutch plate. But its a wear
item, so whatever.

So in total, I paid $850 for the extended, and I got about $4000 out of
it.

No, I don't race my civic, but I don't really baby it either. I followed
the 'severe' schedule for maintenance, since I am in Canada, and had
actually just had the trannie
fluid done before I left on a trip @ 155000km.

So, yes, warranties are a bit of a crapshoot, but its my opinion that
if you have a really good relationship with your dealer, you
should be able to get your moneys worth out of it.
