Misfire Cylinder 1, then random misfires

Honda Civic

Hi
I have been trying to get this misfire problem fixed for months.
First it was misfire cylinder 1. We did a tune up. New plugs, wires,
distributor cap and rotor. Worked good for about a week. Replaced
fuel filter. Put sea foam in gas. Still misfire, some rough idle at
times, misfires going 70 mph too. Got a code for ignitor failing. We
replaced that. Next got more misfires cylinder 1 and multiple
misfires. Engine warning light would flash at times. Took it in
again, garage told me misfire happened at 650 rpm on cylinder 1 on
that code. Next time I had code show up, they told me catalytic
convertor. We replaced catalytic convertor and O2 sensor. Worked
good for about 6 wks, now misfire cylinder 1 and random misfires
again.
Please help! I drive 63 miles one way to work and need this car!

What year and trim level (EX, LX, etc) is this Civic?

Some years had known issues covered by TSBs from Honda.

Hi,
It is a 1998 Honda Civic EX 4 door 5 spd with 134,,000 miles on it
now. We replaced the wires and distributor again, this time with Honda
parts. Will see if that helps.

Don't do that.

Take your car to your local Honda dealer. Have them look up TSB 05-027. It
has to do with poor connections at the igniter. This causes the /exact/
symptoms you are experiencing. Note it's not the igniter that's bad, just
the connectors.

Your cat is covered by an 8-year 80K mile federal warranty. I hope the
original was replaced under that warranty with a new OEM one.

Also, your car is covered by the famous ignition switch safety recall
(case # 02V120000). You should have the dealer check to make sure that
repair has been done.

Visit your local Honda dealer before you blow more cash at garages that
have no idea what they're looking at.
