It's definitely based upon 2004 model year vehicles' reliability ratings.
Glad I bought a new 2002 Lexus IS300. It has been 100% flawless--so I am
sure that the 2004 models will be very reliable for their owners as well.
Toyota definitely makes extremely reliable vehicles for the most part. There
have been exceptions to this rule in the last few years, but all in all,
they are really, really hard to beat for reliability. I've said it before
and I'll say it again. Give me a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan or
Infiniti and I'll be satisfied.
I personally prefer Japan's Big 6 over Detroit's Big 3. :-)

I read from some car BBS, that Honda and Acura 2000 and after models, may
have transmission design problem that casues the transmission early failure.

I own 3 cars at home, 2 Honda accords and 1 Acura TL, I feel they are good
cars, but they do have small problems here and there, compare with the Lexus
300 that once I have owned, the car is absolutely flawless. And I hate Honda
car's oil filter design, it is near impossible to reach, on the othre hand,
Toyota cars, the oil filter is located right on the side of the engine, you
can reach by hand very easy. Maybe next time, I have to shift to Toyota.

my girlfriends taco 4cyl prerunner is a PITA, because the oil drips all
over the faux "skidplate"

my moms scion? right in the front where god intended. reach up under the
bumper, and there it is.

I got a camry and an accord - both with 140K miles. The camry has had
lots more problems......2 steering pumps, 1 steering rack, sway
bushings, dash board lights that cost a fortune in labor to access and
replace, transmissions drain plugs that only drain half of the trans
fluid.......

Lets see.... how many interior door handles have broken????????
Oil leaky V6 engine!

Difficulet to change spark plugs in the rear.....

You are correct, of course. Most cars are reliable enough to make it through
the warranty period without major problems, and many will make it through
the extended warranty period without causing the company to lose money on
the average. But if you are going for the long run, the numbers can be very
different indeed. I recently got rid of an '84 Nissan 300ZX with barely 150K
miles that had me working on it virtually every weekend. Electrical
intermittents mostly, but leaky injectors and a variety of other problems
too. And the spark plug access in that V6 would make Mother Teresa curse
God - and she's dead!

My daughter's '93 Accord has been a solid piece of transportation, even
though it is over 200K miles now. Little to medium-sized problems, but
nothing big.

A timing belt, tensioner (and water pump to ward off evil spirits); both
drive shafts; one power window regulator, an igniter, a heater control valve
(although it appears the control cable is the actual problem), a passenger
door interior latch handle, rear shocks (apparently the original). Those
were 8 instances in 3 1/2 years on a car with more than 150K miles on it -
and only one of those was an emergency repair. The timing belt et al were
overdue when I bought the car.
