thanks for your thoughts. I think you have it figured out correctly.
As a matter of fact I did just that earlier today and that was the
ticket. I just dead ended the blue wire. And everything works
perfectly as it's supposed to. I'm really happy with the success of
this project. I've never ripped apart my car to do something like
this before, so I'm partly relived that I got it back together without
incident. And the map lights are much more useful than the dim center
dome.

Very cool! I'm glad it worked out, although out of curiosity I'd still
like to know what the blue wire is supposed to connect to in the
original 2001 car.
