parking ? & honda mechanics around flossmoor IL 60422 ?

ANyone have anyone they recommened within a 20 mile radious from
flossmoor IL 60422 for timing belt / water pump replacement & main
relay for a 90 prelude 2.0 S? I was qouted at $530 (belt & pump only)
in Dekalb, IL but will be moving so I want the work done out where I'm
going to be. Any recommendations?

Also does it harm your car to park in 1st gear. My parking break
doesn't work for steep inclines and they say it might not be a good
idea to repair it at a mech shop I went to here in dekalb.

Why not tell us the whole story and see if it can be fixed, maybe even
cheaply. Have you always used the brake according to the manual's
suggestion, until recently? Give us the answers to the 5 W's.

I just purchased it about a month ago with 89k on it. It was serviced
at carx in chicago a year ago and is suppose to be still under
warranty but I don't know if they will cover the parking break. Also
I don't really know if it was used at all with the previous owner. I
have to pull it up to the last click to get it to be secure on even
ground. Steep inclines won't work, it'll hold but one nudge and it
will start to drift.

Mechanic out here in Dekalb said it was not a good idea to get it
repaired & just park it in 1st gear. Said the same thing about
getting a new fuel filter when I said I was having cold start
problems. I don't know much about cars so I'm just trying to get some
opinions.

This guy sounds like he's lazy or not familiar enough with Hondas to feel
comfortable working on it. Unless the parking brake is rusted solid or
completely worn off from a previous owner driving around without releasing
it, it is adjustable.

What year is it? Most of the Accords have a separate little drum brake
arrangement behind the rear disks, some of them use the rear disk brake for
the parking brake. I'm guessing you have the first type.

Why didn't he want to change the fuel filter? If it is 2000 or newer, it is
buried in the gas tank, but the older ones are as accessible as in any other
car.

It sounds like you need to go a little closer to the big city and find a
mechanic who knows something about Hondas.

Well, we still don't know the year, but you can take it to any muffler &
brake shop and just ask to have the park brake adjusted. Get a quote in
writing first. Then use it regularly to keep it working right.

P.S. I think the spec is 3-5 clicks to wheel lock. . . . don't let them
set it up for one click (it's not a VW)

6-10 here on my '94 Civic.

What kind of a mechanic would suggest that it *wasn't* a good idea to
get the parking brake repaired?? Guy sounds like a lunkhead.

Call it a "parking" brake, but it is also an emergency brake, and
therefore essential. Especially if you ever stop on a hill and need that
hand brake to keep from smashing into the jerk who pulled up to your
bumper while you get the revs up and the clutch engaged...

1990 Prelude 2.0 S

He suggested leaving the parking break and the fuel filter alone, in
fact 2 mechanics in different places suggested the same thing. Didn't
make sense to me either so I just got qoutes with no intentions on
getting repairs done in Dekalb. I'm moving to Flossmoor IL so I hope
I can find better certified mechanics in the area. If Carx covers
the same warranty in different stores then I might be able to get it
done there.

How does one go finding decent honda mech's in their areas? I'm
looking near Flossmoor Il 60422.
