Premature Timing Belt Failure
Hello, I have a 98 Prelude and it's belt just snapped @ 61,000 miles.
Suggested replacement is @ 90k. Has anyone seen this before? Silly me did not get the extended warranty, I didn't plan to keep the car beyond 70k and now I have to pay. But I'm wanting to see if there is a recall or service notice on it. -J |
Re: Premature Timing Belt Failure
What kind of damage did it do to the engine?
My '99 Prelude needed the auto tensioner replaced at about 64,000 miles (timing belt was making a knocking sound). TSB 01-010 Jan 16, 2001 described the noise as "flapping" and applied to '98-'00. I wish Honda had used a mechanical tensioner for the TB like earlier years. The SOB dealer/zone rep where I've had three Preludes (84, 90, 99) serviced over the last 20 years wouldn't cut any "good will" slack with this known out-of-warranty problem. Haven't seen any notices or TSBs concerning the actual TB. Since the '99 service interval is 105,000 miles, I hope THIS replacement (along with the replaced water pump, TB, balancer belt) will last to 170,000 miles. J.
