Q for Tegger re: parking brake on '02 Accord
 

The parking brake on my 02 Accord will not always release fully. The cable
is loose, and I narrowed it down to the left rear. I can go under the left
rear and manually (with the jack handle) spring it loose. It seems there
is an excessive buildup of crap in the coiled spring that retracts the
little lever when the cable tension is released. One time the RR disc and
wheel were really really hot - almost smoking. I'm not using the parking
brake now, but it's a 5sp manual, so I would like to address it.

Anything I can do more than cleaning off the "retaining" spring and making
sure it's lubed?

Whoo. I don't have a microscope powerful enough to see those clearly.

If it's really the parking brake lever at the caliper that won't return to
its proper position, then the shaft seal has failed and corrosion has
occured on the shaft under the seal, inside the caliper. However...

Are you sure it's not the cable's clevis pin that's seized, keeping the
clevis cocked on an angle? This is extremely common.

Are you sure it's not the piston seized in its bore? This is common as
well, especially if the brake fluid is not changed every two years or you
live in an area where salt is used on the roads.

Those last two are FAR more likely on an '02 than a seized parking brake
shaft.
