Most of it is marketing hoo-ha.

I forget--is that the "standard service" interval, or the "severe
service" interval? Probably the standard. If you follow the "severe
service" maintenance schedule, you'll be more in line with what you're
used to.

That being said, the Car Talk guys have said for many years now that
with ever-better engines and oils, they've changed their recommendation
to 5000 miles. I'm doing that now with my 02 Odyssey and my 00 Accord.
I followed a 3000 mile interval with my 92 Civic, and at 120K miles had
an oil analysis done by Blackstone Labs. The report came back so good,
I didn't hesitate to switch to 5000 miles.

Exactly.

I like the engine computers that track your driving conditions and
recommend when to change the oil based on that. Lots of highway miles
in temperate weather gives a long interval, lots of stop and go and very
short trips and very cold or very hot weather leads to short intervals.
