Just curious......are you really hearing a pinging sound or a faint
clicking sound? IMHO Rain will not drown out an engine ping that
easily. As others have posted, do check the heat shields (if they on
the way out they start with a faint rattle, and it may not come on
when the metal is being splashed with water on and off). On my 91
Civic I get a faint clicking sound when my gas tank is 1/4 tank or
lower (especially when I accelerate on the highway). It turned out
that the sound was coming from the purge control solenoid valve. It
was just doing its job. I am not familiar with your model, but you may
also have similar solenoid valves mounted on the engine side of the
firewall. Someone with sharp ears or someone attuned to the noise
pattern can hear it...others won't. Just a thought.
