Most brake pads have a piece of metal attached to side of the pad. These
make a sort of ringing or squealing sound when it time to change the pads.
Pads are not meant to worn down to the metal backing. As for the grove if
it's not too deep it can be resurfaced. If you take your car to the dealer
for scheduled maintained, the technician will sometime note if the pads need
to be changed. You can always remind them to check the brakes, when they
rotate the tires, another thing most people don't do often enough.
