I have a similar problem with a 1991, onlt the speedo fails when the light
blinks.
Any one have an answer for this?

in my case, pulsar signal was missing. a couple of squirrel had some
fun in the engine department, and chewed my signal wire. When it is
flashing try to read what it says.
