Get a second and third opinion. It maybe just normal casting spall or
crazing.

better yet, try to figure out if the car's fallen apart. if not, it's a
pretty safe bet it's normal mold surface transfer. and that the nimrod
at midas needs educating with a very blunt instrument.

Thanks for the quick responses. No, the car is not fallling apart
[normally maintained Honda's don't do that until at least 450,000
km. ]. I understand what you are saying with the 'mold surface
transfer' but I would note that the left side casting of the tranny
housing has no such 'surface cracks' on it and, if it were from the
mold, would you not think that the technician would have seen
something like it before?
I was always planning on getting at least a second opinion from a
Honda dealer but, since I have had reason to doubt their
recommendations in the past, I thought I would tap this 'knowledge
base' first. Again, TIA

The occurrence of cracks from the casting process are not at all
uncommon with aluminum cases etc. I rebuilt several vintage Honda
motorcycles and stress casting cracks were numerous but never had an
effect as to structural integrity.

the mold. they mean absolutely nothing but from a manufacturing
perspective, cost significant money to remove. so they don't.

/real/ casting stress cracks otoh are a serious matter and result in
almost immediate failure. i do not believe there is any way q.c. would
miss the real deal. and even if they had, the resulting failure would
be most apparent.

as for the op paying attention to anything some retard at midas says -
it just makes my brain hurt.

Not sure what your specific history with Midas might be but I have
been using them for routine maintenance for several years now and have
never had a problem with them. While, like many other "car shops",
they may try to sell services that are not needed based on their
having your car up on the hoist, they have never tried this with me!
The technician took the time to point something out to me that he had
never seen before and that he thought I should know about. For that, I
am grateful to him (and I didn't notice any signs of him being
'retarded', which is actually a very unkind thing for you to say about
someone based solely on their place of employment). I will ask the
Honda dealer about the 'cracks' next time I have the car in with them
[timing belt replacement is coming up] but I will be continuing to use
Midas for the servicing of my car.
