Tegger:

As always, thanks for chiming in.

You open up a whole other subject of great interest to me. Please
check on the accuracy of your statement. I respect your expertise, but
I believe you are incorrect on this, at least in some cases. Shell is
also Top Tier, and many stations sell the brand without ethanol.

Here in Wisconsin, at some stations, they sell gas with and without
10% ethanol. The pumps specifically state that fact. The Road Ranger/
Pilot station I referenced had "Top Tier" decals on ALL the pumps,
those with and without ethanol.

By the way, they charge a little more for the fuel without ethanol,
and I'm glad to pay the extra price. I get much better gas mileage
with non-enthanol fuel.

They cannot sell "Top Tier" gas without ethanol. There is no such thing.

Excerpted from the Top Tier Gas website's Deposit Control page at
http://www.toptiergas.com/deposit_control.html :

"1.3.1.2 Base Fuel. The base fuel shall conform to ASTM D 4814 and shall
contain commercial fuel grade ethanol conforming to ASTM D 4806."

"The base fuel shall have the following specific properties after the
addition of ethanol:
1. Contain enough denatured ethanol such that the actual ethanol content
is no less than 8.0 and no more than 10.0 volume percent...."

Then they are violating the "Top Tier" standard. they're using the "Top
Tier" designation on non-Top-Tier gas in the hopes of snookering
unsuspecting motorists.
