running Civic that hasn't run for years
 

I have a friend who has been given a hand me down '87 Civic Si. It has not
been driven or ran for years. No one put oil in the spark plug holes for
proper storage of the engine. What can be done to minimize damage and the
effects of sitting like this before it is started?

Fresh oil change, fresh battery, pull the plugs and squirt oil in the
cylinders and turn the engine over for about ten seconds with no plugs
in it. Replace the plugs, PRAY, and see what happens.

I don't know a whole hell of a lot about engines, but I'd suggest that you pour
some oil in each plug hole, with the battery and spark plug wires disconnected.
Then turn the engine a few times by hand to get the oil worked in.

I guess when you start it, it'll smoke a lot, but once the oil all burns off you
should be OK.

I would let the oil set in the cylinders at least overnight to free up the
rings more before cranking the engine over by hand.

Do a fresh oil change before cranking the engine over.

It may be more beneficial to use some lightweight hydraulic tool oil (low
viscosity, will seep in a little better). That is what I used to use to put
away my motorcycle for the winter.
