Speed Sensor VSS for Honda CIVIC 93: Please help

My speedometer is not working. Engine light turns on after couple of
minutes drive. I am assuming VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) went bad. Can
anybody please tell me where VSS located in Honda 93, CIVIC, LX sedan.
I am very novice and never worked on a car. However, I am not in a
condition to spend money beyond the parts cost now. If any of you
could tell me how can I locate my exisiting VSS and replace with a
good one. I call a dealer, they ask for $116 which I will buy after
making sure that this is really because of VSS. I know the ECL code
for VSS 17 and will make sure this today.

I would really appreciate if you could describe how could I locate the
VSS, replace it by a new one.

Thanks in Advance..

Re: Speed Sensor VSS for Honda CIVIC 93: Please help

The VSS is located on the transmission, see
http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/civicma...df/23-a122.pdf for an up-close
drawing that doesn't really tell you where it is located. There is also
a drawing at http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/civicmanual/pdf/13-4.pdf that
shows a larger, less detailed view.

Before replacing the VSS, check that fuse # 24 (#12 if you do not have
air bags) is intact, as this is the fuse that feeds power to the VSS.

Re: Speed Sensor VSS for Honda CIVIC 93: Please help

Thanks both of you. You guys are so helpful. I appreciated it.
I am able to locate VSS. Randolph my car has driver side airbag only.
I will check both fuse 12 and 24.

Now, I need more help.
1)How can I verify the engine check light ECL for Honda CIVIC 93, LX.
2)Where is the service connector located. By service connector I mean
the jack you need to use to test ECU code. I heard under the hood,I
also heard under the dash board on passenger side. I look in both
places, did not find any.
3)If you guys know the location or if you guys have any graphics for
that, could you please post it here. Before, I start changing VSS.
4)Regarding VSS, can this happen that 3 wires that coming to the 3 pin
connector on VSS is broken or torn off. I couldn't verify this as it
is covered by tap/something? How do I verify that?

I would appreciate your answer

Thanks

There is a service check connector located under the dash. Look in front
of the passenger side door jamb. The carpet goes up the side panel, and
behind the carpet is the ECU. A few inches above the ECU you will find
the service check connector taped to a wire harness. There should be a
two position service check connector and a 3 position data link
connector. You want the two position one. Short the two positions
together with a paper clip bent into a U shape and
turn on the ignition. The MIL (check engine light) in the instrument
panel will flash the code as a sequence of short and possibly long
flashes. Short flashes are the 1's and long flashes are the 10's.

There is a drawing at
http://www.honda.co.uk/owner/civicmanual/pdf/11-14.pdf. You do not need
the "SCS Short connector", a paper clip works just as well.

Could be. A break in either one of these wires would cause the VSS not
to work. Page 23-140 of the service manual available at
http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/ shows how to check the integrity of
the wiring to the VSS. And to save you some trouble, page 23-140 is page
1080 (of 1258) in the .pdf document.

Re: Speed Sensor VSS for Honda CIVIC 93: Please help

The VSS is located on the top of the transaxle to the rear of the engine
compartment, look under and to the right of the battey. It has a three wire
plug that sticks straight up. You can test it if you have a volt meter. I
would recommend getting a repair manual from Auto Zone or your local parts
store (should cost about 20.00) and follow the steps to check the VSS. This
may save you some money. Although the cost of 116.00 seems pretty good
because I priced one for mine and it was 280.00. Turns out mine was only a
bad contact in the plug.
Good Luck!

Re: Speed Sensor VSS for Honda CIVIC 93: Please help

Thanks you everybody for the help. I think I have found the service
connector. I just want to verify one more time. Both service connector
(2 pins) and data link connector (3 pins) where inside a green rubber
cover just little below the glove box on the right side. As it was not
dangling rather sticked inside a well fitted green cover, I never
thought about this. Can you guys confirm me that I found service
connector not anything else on Honda CIVIC 93, LX sedan.
After you guys confirm me I am going to perform the testing. If it
shows code 17, I am sure something wrong with VSS. If 17, I will make
sure that connection with VSS is also good. Previous post have
suggested to test it by voltmeter according to manual. I have the
manual and did not find anything about testing the connection of VSS.
Can you guys suggest how could I verify that wiring/connection of 3
pin VSS is good by voltmeter??

After I perform that and find nothing wrong, I will get a new VSS/used
VSS and replace the old one. Replacing should be fairley easy. If the
problem still persist, I am screwed ;))...

I think you found it. See

The VSS is mentioned both under Fuel System and Electrical System in the
'94 service manual. I have never seen the '93 manual. Testing at the VSS
connector is described in the Electrical section of the manual, page
23-140 (or 1080 of 1258) at
http://www.hondahookup.com/manuals/USDM_92-95_civic.zip.

Looks simple. Just heed the warning about the small drive link that is
easy to loose.
