stock tires in winter?
 

I'm getting my 06 accord soon (EX-L 4 cyl) car soon and its already started
snowing. hwo are the normal tires (michilin's) in the winter? form the
reviedws I've read it's been mixed at best (from tire rack) I was thinking
of selling these as soon as I get them and getting something different. I
don't want to go with snowtires (don't want to buy new rims, and ahve to
deal wiht changing them over, plus don't hvae a place to store an extra set
of tires) so I'm looking for opinions on a good all season tire. I have
yokohama Avid V4's on my 2001 maxima and they were great in 3 season
driving, I just never had a chance to test them in the snow. any feedback
would be appreciated. thanks

I don't know how good those particular Michelins are in any type of
weather, although like most OEM tires, they are probably not great. That
means they are probably very bad in the snow.

If you are serious about not wanting a winter tire, I believe somebody
here suggested the Nokian WR(?) which supposedly is an all-season tire
that performs well in snow.

I bought a set of Toyo Observe G-02 Plus winter tires (w/ rims) for my '93
Accord last week, even though my existing all-seasons (Goodyear Regatta 2)
are not bad in light snowfall conditions. Nokians are impossible to find
in my neck of the woods.

I'm just looking for a good mix, I don't drive perticularly hard so I'd be
willing to sacrafice dry performance for safety in snow and rain. I LOVED
the yoko Avid V4's on my maxima in the rain (so much better than the crappy
potenza's I had on there that came with the car) I figured that if I buy new
tires and get them put on and sell teh michlins with less than 100 miles on
them, I can probably pay next to nothing (besides mounting and balancing) to
get better tires. is it possible to get different tires put on by the
dealer? (say "well I'll take the car, but I don't want those tires") or is
that not possible? thanks!

Those are winter tires; the OP is asking about all-seasons. I certainly
hope you are not suggesting to run winter tires year round.

Hmm, when I bought them 7 years ago, they were considered a winter tire that could be used year round. I never had a problem with them in the summer, they're not as blocky / chunky as the old winter tires used to be. In the old days, of course. ;-)

I never had a problem with the all-season tires on it. This for light snow,
but anything past that I get the Pilot out :-)

If you can afford a 2nd set of wheels, get snows, and run them in the
winter, then switch back in the summer...using this plan, you won't be
buying anymore tires for a LONG time!

You won't get much for them anyway. They are pretty good street tires.

Where is where? Though we all know that dedicated tire sets are ideal,
people drive their entire lives in snowy locales with all season tires.
Good driving still counts for a lot! I certainly wouldn't waste a new set
of Michelins under any circumstance.

When I needed my tires replaced, I got a good deal on Goodyear TripleTreads
(sp?). I shied away from Goodyear tires in the past because they had been
overpriced, but these are good tires. They stick good in the summer with no
squeal, and have a long tread life rating. We've had 20 inches of snow in
the last week, and either these tires (and car dynamics) are super in the
snow, or I'm a better driver than I thought. I'm zipping down four-lane
streets and highways with no hint of traction problems where all kinds of
other vehicles are putzing along. Since my Accord is a 5-speed, I can
usually tell when roads are getting slippery. I've driven 4wd trucks (at
work) over the same roads and they didn't feel nearly as planted. Only
problem I have is slippery ice around some intersections before it gets worn
down. I've driven through eight-inch snow with no problems. Oh, and these
tires have 35k miles on them now... I like 'em!

I had NOKIAN WRs on my Lexus LS430 and they were great in the snow...but
burned up in under 10,000 miles here in Pittsburgh. Granted, my driveway is
steep and I spun more than once getting out. But for $700 or so plus
installation they should last more than that anywhere.
