Syntetic oil for Honda Accord.

I own 1997 Honda Accord and was wondering how much better using syntetic oil
would be?
I have never used syntetic before, is it worth while to switch now?
Do I still have to change every 5000km if I use syntetic oil? I heard
someone said that it is ok to change every 20000 km if you use syntetic, is
it true?
Since I am new to syntetic oil, any information will be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know where I can find owner manuals and/or repair manuals for my
car on the net?

Regards,
Walter.

I used Castrol synthetic in my old Accord EXR, and now in my Prelude SE.
Almost all synthetics do the job well, unless you buy the no-name brands
wallmart (and other big box stores) are selling.

You can go slightly longer on a synthetic oil, but 20000km is way too
long. Whoever was changing their oil that rarely will need an engine
rebuild soon. I always changed my oil at 6-7000km, but you could go up
to 7500km.

Re: Syntetic oil for Honda Accord.

I used Mobil 1 in my '91 Accord once, and it was fine. It might have run a
touch more easily or smoother, but probably just my mind hoping something
would be different. My'98 BMW M3 uses synthetic and the car computer almost
never asks for an oil change prior to 10,000 miles, or 16,100 miles. Fact
is, some new cars are scheduled for oil changes every 15,000 miles or 24,150
km.

All oils are much better than they used to be, so in my view, changing oil
every 5000km is overkill. Even for non-synthetic oil. The BMW was still
asking for oil changes at over 10,000 miles with regular oil, before a
service bulletin came out recommending synthetic. Check out www.mobil1.com
for more information.

You should be able to go for longer oil change intervals with a quality
synthetic. 10,000 km would generaly be safe as long as your engine doesn't
have any internal issues.

A free 6 pack case of Valvoline synthetic is available (at least in the US,
not sure about other countries) using this rebate:

Slightly better; but better considering the difference in price.

NO.

Yes, you should follow the Owner's Manual recommendations. Why waste
money and add to pollution? Used motor oil is hazardous waste.

NO; Believe nothing of what you "hear" and only 1/2 of what you see.

P.S. if you want the best oil for your Honda, believe it or not, it can
be had at your local dealer; genuine Honda motor oil.

Re: Syntetic oil for Honda Accord.

I am a user of synthetic oil on my Honda CR-V, but I started to use it with
my first oil change. And I love it because I get a few more miles to the
gallon.

Now as far as the benefits and how often to change.

The primary reason to change to synthetic is to reduce friction which in
turn reduces ware. Switching after a lot of miles are on a vehicle kind of
negates reducing ware, but by reducing friction you may see a gain in
mileage.

I maintain the same maintenance schedule for changing the synthetic, even I
have been told that you can extend. For me the cost is just not worth the
risk. Also, I purchase the synthetic oil and have a local lube place
install, saves big time.
