Two '98's with problems

Sister's '98 Prelude with 40,000 miles needs a left rear wheel bearing,
and my son just e mailed me that the check engine light is on on his '98
Accord. Dealership says it's the catalytic converter, $1000 US. I don't
know the mileage on his car, but I'll find out.
Any of the above sound familiar to anyone? bob

Re: Two '98's with problems

Bob,
I also have a 98 Accord abd there are a few things that can cause it. This
even happened to me recently.

It sems that if you don't screw down the gas cap and run the car...a
pressure differential can not build in thetank and the converter goes into
an error state. Everything still works but the converter is in bypass
mode... Anyway...try filling the tank with gas...screw in the cap (at least
till you hear 4 -5 clicks) and then turn the car on and run it.... Now this
condition MAY (repeat MAY) clear itself after the 3rd or 4th restart. This
did not work for me...

The dealer also indicated that the problem may be a bad gas
cap...again...not my problem.

My problem was solved by having the dealer test and reset the alarm...total
cost $65...no problems since then.

(OH, my gas cap was loose...not sure how that happened).

Good luck!

Scott

Re: Two '98's with problems

On my '99 Accord, they was a (free) recall on the EGR valve that will cause
the Engine light. Reportedly, Honda drills out the "hole" for the EGR valve
and makes it a little bigger. (like my tech talk?!?!) Took about 30 mins
to fix
