washing off engine block
 

our 95 passport developed a coolant leak which left puddles of coolant
all over the engine block. my son found and fixed the leak in auto
school, but class ended last week and he couldn't use the shop anymore.
my Q is--can we open the hood and wash down the engine block with a
soapy water spray if it's been sitting cold all night? we need to flush
the radiator and wash the car today anyway so we'll have the water hose
hooked up[ and have a detergent mixing sprayer]. is there anything
one should do before trying such a clean up under the hood? take out the
battery? anyplace we definitely should NOT get wet? how bout
overspraying a pprotective coat of something afterwards to ward off
rust? if this whole concept is not a good one, how yould YOU go about
cleaning up such a mess if it happened to your engine?

Shouldn'g be a problem to spray it off with soap and water. You can also
purchase many engine cleaning solutions that you simply spray on, allow to
sit, and then wash off with a hose.

I think the only to be careful of is using a real pressure sprayer.
Otherwise, you should be fine.

I have washed my engine many times (94 integra) without incedent. However, I
am no auto expert.

I used to often wash my engine but because of ecology concerns I
stoped doing it. The storm drain in front of my house drains into our
local lagoon so I do not want any oil and grease draining into the
Lagoon.

I used to cover all the electrical items with plastic wrap and duct
tape. Also don't get any water into the engine air intake.
I used 409 then a hose and as soon as I finished I removed the plastic
wrap and ran the engine for a while to dry everything.
