What do you think?

That you would get a better deal when you buy one car or five people
get together and buy five cars from the same dealer?

It depends on what BRAND of car you all buy. You might get 5 x SCREWED.

Ain't gonna matter enough to bother, especially after the portal takes
a cut. You'd have to get it into the dozens to save two percent.

No. A car isn't as much of a commodity item as, say, DVD players.

No dealer is going to "give away" cars when he can sell them to someone else
and make an additional $100-$4,000 in profit.

Now, the sole exception to this rule may be a Chrysler/Dodge dealer. Most
of them are drowning in '06s thanks to Chrysler's weird "sales bank" policy.
Look it up, it's insane.

As much as I agree with you that no dealer is going to give away cars,
no dealer is also going to pass up $100,000 (assuming $20K is the cost
of one car) of business. The more the number of people getting together
the more you will be able to negotiate especially if you time it around
the dealership sales events when they are trying to get rid of
inventory.
