When to replace CV Boots
 

The dealership says my CV boots are 'weathered' and may need
replacing.

Not being a real car guy, I'm not even sure what a CV boot is. I'm
guessing it's the rubber accordian piece around the end of each of the
ends of the front axles where it connects to the brake assembly.

I've heard once it tears, you can have major problems if stuff gets
inside.

I do trust my local Honda dealership, but I just want to check it out
myself. Is this the correct part and do I just look for cracks and
signs that tearing is imminent?

depending on how long you expect to keep the car and how long you had
cracks, or is it just Weatehering??? which might meant that it might
tear???? the fluid/grease will wash out with the rain/water from under
the car and they you are metal to metal.. i got one on a 93 taurus that
has a tear in one of the boots, its been this way for about 4 yrs now
and i dont have any problems with the thing driving, but will change it
out maybe next year or so if i keep this car... if not then the next guy
can worry about it... with me i will do the work and it will proably
take me 2-3 yrs. to do it, and the parts will be about $60 from
autozone for a new CV shaft.... the dealer will probably charge you
about $400 each side for your car.. they have to pay labor, insurance,
taxes, etc. and a profit.. i dont have to pay myself anything....

Yes, it's best to replace the CV boots before they split open. To check
them, turn the wheels all the way to the left and check the left boot for
cracks and then repeat the process for the other side. If the cracks look
like they're deeper than about 25-30% of the thickness of the entire boot
material, then they should be replaced.
