Wierd problem

My friend has an 1987 CRX SI, he has a problem with cranking the car up. He
said when he cranks it over he has to hold the key cranked over for the
engine to stay on, once he lets go it shuts off. He tried taking the
carburator off and the car still did the same thing. What could be the
problem?

One possibility that comes to mind is a failed ballast resistor.
