wtb: block heater for 93 Accord EX-R
 

wanted to buy: Honda block heater for a 1993 Accord EX-R.

I can't seem to locate a genuine Honda block heater. My mechanic tells me
that aftermarket block heaters may not fit properly and might pop out in
extreme cold. Apparently in southern Ontario the aftermarket block heater
might work but in northern Saskatchewan (where I'm headed this winter) the
plug might pop out. Is this any truth to this?

i picked up a replacement for a 99 civic, from canadian tire. ($40)
It looks identical to the factory one, it actually screws
into the engine block. I could imagine some different styles
causing problems, there is the kind that just sits in the
expansion plug, and you tighten a bolt to expand the base
of the block heater. I couldn't imagine this style of
block heater being very secure, but the screw in type has
got to be pretty fool proof. I wouldn't hesitate to go aftermarket
on the screw in type.

But trying to get that puppy loose was another story. They
use some kind of thread locker on the threads, so its
very difficult.

the threads.

Just out of curiousity. what province do you live in?

I think i'll go with the screw in type from crappy tire. I was a bit
hestitant after what the mechanic told me about the heater popping out of
the block. (I was having nightmares of not being able to start the car
in -30 with coolant on the ground). Makes more sense now after your
explanation.

I'm in Manitoba. Like I said, the OEM and the CT one looked
identical. My sister backed up without unplugging, and
that broke one of the prongs inside the actual unit.
