I'm in Michigan I would suggest locating a auto salvage yard

Look up "japan parts"They have thousands of 25K mile motors for japanese cars.Japan scraps motors after 25K miles for smog reasons.Ask a mechanic if your engin bends valves when the belt goes, if not, you can replace the belt for around 4or 500 bucks. That car should give you 300K miles. If you are at 150 or so devinately fix it.

You're putting good money after bad by trying to keep that old wreck going. Cut your losses, junk the eighteen year old rust bucket and start looking for something newer and in decent shape.

I Don't Believe This Is An Interference Motor, Meaning The Valves Didn't Hit The Pistons When You Cranked It Over. If They Did However, It Still May Be Worth Fixing. A Few Bent Valves And A New Timing Bet Is Cheaper Than An Engine Swap. Sounds Like Your Mechanic Is Trying To Rip You Off.
