Plugged radiator, bad thermostat, cooling fans inoperative, blown head gasket, or something blocking the flow of air through the radiator thats trapped between the radiator and ac condensor

Could be several things,

- the gauge or sender could be faulty

- the thermostat might be stuck closed not allowing coolant flow

- the radiator may be blocked or require repair due to thinning of the cooling fins which does happen with age

- the water pump may require replacement

- you may have a blown head gasket

- thermofan may not be correctly functioning (mechanical fans can also fail)

- advanced ignition timing can lead to increased heat

- a lean fuel mixture may do the same

- if the spark plugs have recently been replaced check they are the correct type and heat range, this can also cause overheating problems.

Sorry about the long list but cars can be cranky things!
