02 Elantra

I am thinking of buying a used 02 elatnra with the 5 sp transmission. It
has 44000 for a 2 year old car. Looking for advice from anybody who has one
or can attest to their performance.

Thanks in advance!

Todd

Re: 02 Elantra

I had to overhaul a 5-speed tranny that was grinding into 2nd gear on a new
'04 Elantra (less than 4,000 mi, I think). I've seen some remarks about
gear grinding on the Elantra here, but that's my only personal experience.
After replacing some synchronizers and the gears and other parts damaged
by the grinding, all operated well.

It looked to me like it may have been a machining issue and something that
was not operating correctly off the assembly line. I suspect that those
which don't have a problem will continue to not have a problem and those
which do, won't have the problem after being repaired. I believe the
01-04 Elantras all used the same 5-speed.

I don't recall anything which I've seen as a repeat nuisance problem area
on these cars.

I have an '03 elantra 5spd, which is pretty much the same thing as
yours. I've racked up about 27k miles so far, and it's still
performing beautifully. No problems whatsoever with the tranny.
It's my first manual so I'm not sure if this is a standard thing or if
it's just this car, but the clutch is hellishly sensitive when the car
is cold (i.e., you have to engage it just right or the car bucks), but
gets better as the car warms up, after about 2 minutes.

For price, etc.: http://www.kbb.com/ Kelly Blue Book.
You've probably already reserched price but could help anyway.

I own a '02 Elantra. Purchased it about a year ago, I would never recommend
it to anyone! Yeah they're cheap but you get what you pay for.

I guess my opinion would more than negate yours.

I own a 2002 Elantra GT since November 2001 and it is the best Hyundai I
have owned.

My website speaks as to my recommendations.

Bought my wifes 02 GT new, 2 years now and still waiting for the downside, I
have the
10 year B to B and will keep it that long at least (kept a new chevy van for
24 years) .

Michael, if you can keep a Chevy van (or any vehicle for that matter) for 24
years then you must care for your vehicles, and must maintain and look after
them well.

That is all your wife's Elantra will need and it should last just as long
provided it is not in a wintery (salt on the roads) type climate in which
case the job gets that much harder.

The difficulty in keeping the EGT for 24 years would be parts. Unlike Chevy
which not only keep the same parts for years and years, re-using the old
technology on new vehicles etc., there is a good aftermarket support. The
same cannot be said for Hyundai, so you'd likely run out of parts long
before the 24 years are up.
