04 Sonata trans, again

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. My 04 V6 GLS
Sonata likes to downshift from 3rd gear right into 1st, completely
bypassing 2nd. No a big problem if I am coming to a complete stop, but
if I slow down to 1 or 2 MPH then accelerate, I'm in 3rd. Really sucks
if I'm heading up a hill.

I wasn't sure what was really going on, so I tried it in manual
Shiftronic (or whatever it's called) Sure enough you can watch it
downshift, from 4th, to 3rd to 1st. About 5% of the time it will go
into 2nd.

This tranny has ben nothing but problems since getting the car new in
Oct 03. No major problems, but enough to wish I stayed clear of
Hyundai. The service dept (I think they were hired straight from
McDonalds) more or less tells me that's the way it's supposed to shift

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

There is a TSB out for re-programming the shift patterns/adaptive learning
function of this transmission----

I had it applied to my '04 Sonata GLS V6 2.7L and that cleared up all these
shifting problems for me--

TSB # 04-40-006-1

Take the car in and ask that this TSB number be applied to the TCM. It is
free of charge.

Hope this helps--

My 03 has been doing the same thing since I got that software update a
while back. It's irritating as hell.

Ooo... That'sa new one. I'll have to go get that applied. I'm due
for an oil change anyway.

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

There's nothing there that sounds terribly abnormal. The trans will tend
not to downshift unless you're putting the engine under load. If you slow
down enough, it may choose first gear. If you have no trouble codes, then
most likely the dealer is correct.

The reprogram cited does not apply to your vehicle. That programming is
already in the trans computer in 04 models. The reprogramming only
applies to 02 & 03 models which had different original programming. This
reprogram was to solve a 2-3 shift flare.

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

Sorry, you're right hyundaitech---

TSB 04-40-006 was superceded (with the -01 designation at the end) to NOT
include the 2004 model year. The original one (without the -01) included my
production date. Hmmmmmm, I had it applied to my car and it improved my
shift quality, flare and delayed 2-3 upshift when the engine is cold.

What gives here?

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

I suppose it's possible it could have some unwanted effect on the 04's.
Most likely, on attempting to reprogram, the scan tool simply says
"already reprogrammed" or "ECM is a different type." The bulletin
specifically says the bulletin was superseded to change the vehicles
affected. I won't be able to get any further info than that from Hyundai
-- they guard it closely.

Re: Hyundai's r bad, signed GM LOL

Yeah, that's why I traded my LEMON Chevy Venture in, a higher quality
vehicle? Haven't you ever heard of the Piston Slap that GM says is "normal".
Check out www.pistonslap.com and see how high GM's quality is.
So much for the higher quality in North American vehicles.

Let us be honest! Lets not even rate GM highter than Hyundai. Hyundai is
anyday better than GM in terms of quality and the best part is the
warranty. GM cannot even dream of giving such warranty. You get to hear
all kinds of problems from the GM cars. Engine,Xmission, axle .. common!
how can it die within warranty period! That shows how much they apply onto
the manufacturing.. Hyundai is bang for the buck!

Re: Hyundai's r bad, signed GM LOL

That's what I mean, GM is woefully behind the times with customer
satisfaction. I will never again but a vehicle from them. Their engineering
stinks!

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

Even though my Sonata was sold as an '04, it was built Aug 12, 03, and
I remember reading somewhere that this tranny (along with many other
parts I would bet) is considered '03.

As far as the shifting, it is not normal. Slow down to about 1 MPH and
then accelerate, and still be in 3rd gear? Far from normal

Same with my Saturn. Pure junk.

Re: 04 Sonata trans, again

Staying in third gear on acceleration from 1MPH is not normal, I agree, but
I was under the impression that the original poster did not like the fact
that it shifted directly from 3rd to 1st, which is normal.
