1993 Elantra Harmonic Balancer Repalcement
 

I am faced with the unfortunate task of replacing the harmonic balancer
on my 93 Elantra (1.6l). My question is whether the best way would be
to pull the engine up thru the hood and change it, drop the engine down
thru the bottom of the chassis and change it, or pick the engine up a
little and slide it back and work around. I have never changed a HB on
any car. However, just recently changed the alternator on this car and
that was a pain. There is very little clearance between the engine and
the fender. Any help is appreciated.

It should be pretty easy, actually. Remove the right front lower splash
shield and the bracket attached to the frame rail (held on by two 17mm
bolts and a 17mm nut) and the side splash shield.

You should have a pretty good view now of the crank pulley (harmonic
balancer). Remove the A/C and alternator belts. Remove the 22mm bolt
from the center of the pulley. Remove the four 12mm bolts from pulley and
pull the pulley out. If I recall correctly, there should be enough room
there to get it out the bottom now.

Looked it over and this looks do-able. I started to take the bracket
off, but there are apparantly nuts on the back of the two bolts (if not,
I am really in trouble). Is there an access point so that I can hold
these with a wrench?

The nuts should be welded in place. If they've come loose, that will be a
large problem.
