1998 Hyundai Accent Will not Start Help???

hi
1998 hyundai accent 4 door automatic 1.5l sohc
working normally with no codes or check engine light on.
this has happened previously(long periods in between) also.someone asked
before if the tachometer needle bounced while cranking the engine and it
does not!!!
drove the car about 40 miles today, parked for about 2 hours and came back
out to go home.
car turns over will not start.doesn't smell flooded.
something is humming near the fuel injection(fuel pump???)
seems that there is no spark as i pulled a plug and had someone turn the
ignition but there was no spark.
checked all the fuses(under hood and under dash) and they are fine.
what should be checked next coil pack?,etc.
any help would be appreciated.
thanks,jeff

Probably a dying crank sensor.

hi hyundaitech
thanks for the info.
is that the sensor to the left of the coil pack(against the valve pan) held
on by one single bolt?
thats probably the cam position sensor that i am refering to as its up
pretty high on the engine head.
if not can you tell me where it is located?how easy to change etc.
thanks,jeff

Re: 1998 Hyundai Accent Will not Start Help???

Yep. The one you see is the cam sensor. The crank sensor mounts into the
block. As you have the hood up, with the engine on the left and the trans
on the right, it will be just to the left of the trans but to the right of
the exhaust. It will look very similar to the cam sensor and should have
a similar connector in a spring clip holder. Good luck getting the bolt
out. If I recall correctly, the bolt head is a little too close to the
sensor to get a socket on it and after 6 years, it's likely in well enough
you'll strip the phillips head. If you're trying to use a Phillips, be
sure to use a #3. Otherwise, you have no chance.

Re: 1998 Hyundai Accent Will not Start Help???

Oops. It's not a 10mm. It's just a #3 phillips screw. Now I remember why
it was such a pain. I have one to do now. I seem to recall hammering a
10mm or 3/8 or whatever will hammer over the screw head to get a bite on
it. Replace it with a hex head bolt for future ease of repair.

The tacho signal comes from the CKP sensor, but no-bounce does not
necessarily mean it's shot. You need to check the entire CKP sensor
circuit and the sensor surface for metal fragments.

Re: 1998 Hyundai Accent Will not Start Help???

hi
is the ckp the crank position sensor?
what would metal flakes on the sensor indicate?
it seems like if the car sits for a couple hours then it starts normally.
it also never happens when the engine is warm.

Re: 1998 Hyundai Accent Will not Start Help???

I know this thread is about the Accent. However I had a similar problem with
my 2004 Elantra GT with 110 miles on it.
It drove fine since I collected it from the dealer. One day I went to pick
my son up ; I was out of the car for five minutes. It would not start after
that.It turned over but died after about 10 secs.I heard no unusual sounds
,nor saw any warning lights.I also reset the alarm to discount an alarm
engine cutoff problem. It had to be towed to the dealer. The mechanics said
there was a problem with wire from the ignition switch ??????????? It is
fine so far.Keeping my fingers crossed.

Yes it's the std. acronym for "crankshaft position."
