200 Hyundai Elantra
Hi,
I own a 2000 hyundai elantra with less than 50k miles, and I have an ignition problem. When I go to turn the car off I can't turn the key entirely off to take it out of the ignition. I can turn it as far as shutting off the engine, a/c, and power windows. Has anyone had experience with this problem? If so, do you know how much it is to fix? Thank you |
Re: 200 Hyundai Elantra
Any oddities with your shifter? Have to press the button to shift R-D or
D-N or some other movement that shouldn't requrie pushing the button? Any instance when you don't have to push the button but should? The shifter has a detent pin which normally closes a switch when you shift into park, which sends a signal to a small computer which then turns off (or on, I can't remember) the solenoid allowing you to take the key out of the ignition. If the shifter behaves abnormally, almost certainly the pin is bent or out of position and needs to be replaced. Otherwise, you'll need to pull the console and have a look around. Check the pin to make sure it is straight and pushes the metal tab to close the switch when shifted into park. If that all seems to work correctly, shift back to 2 or 1 to get the shifter away from the switch, and tweek the lever with your finger or small screwdriver while the key is in the "on" position. You should hear the solenoid click in the steering column. If not, check the switch. I've seen cars that needed new switches and others that needed the "Key Lock and Control Module." |
