2000 Accent Oil Filter Fun

Just a word of advice: if you do your own oil changes, don't rely on
what the oil filter books tell you. The books say the 1.5L SOHC engine
uses a Fram 6607 filter, but mine takes a 3593A instead (which is
notably larger than the dinky tomato-sauce-can 6607).

It's funny you say that. My XG350L claims the same 6607 from Fram (and
all the others by the way). I did not like the size of the filter so I
went with OEM (Hyundai). They give me 33% off at the dealer (buy 2,
get one free!) so I can't even buy 3rd party for the price I pay for
OEM ($3.50 ea). Just kind of curious, where did you find your car
takes a 3593A from? I would think many would fit, but only one is
recommended.
BTW, I assume you do a lot of work on your car. I found on my XG350L,
there is NO transmission filter on a 2002! I justed changed the fluid
by unscrewing the drain plug (YES!!! A DRAIN PLUG!!!) and refilled it!
Took less time then me doing an oil change. My wifes Santa Fe (02) is
the same.

The first time I changed the oil I bought the 6607 not knowing any
better (the filter is directly under the alternator on the 1.5L, so
you can't really see it without going under the car to look). I took
the Hyundai filter off, got out the 6607, and realized it was way too
small for the filter adapter plate, and the threaded hole on the
filter was about a quarter-inch too small for the dongle.

After the requisite cussing and swearing, I took both filters to the
auto parts store and, with the counter guy checking just about every
Hyundai in the computer, I spent about 15 minutes looking for a filter
that matched the OEM part. Interestingly, the 3593A is the same filter
that my Isuzu pickup takes, and that one has a 2.25L engine.

One thing I've noticed is that Hyundais do seem to be more
maintenance-friendly than many other makes. My sister's Cavalier has
the oil filter mounted on the back of the engine right by the firewall
with a bunch of hoses and crap blocking it, and there's no way to get
it off without putting the car on a lift and finding someone with a
double jointed wrist to reach back there and unscrew it.

David Thompson, I'll bet the Korean lettering on the Hyundai filter
reads: "Ignore what the book says! I'm a Fram 3593A!"...

the original Mars about thirty thousand years ago."
