2000 Elantra fuel pump issues
**Hi everyone. A co-worker of mine has a 2000 Elantra that's on its 3rd fuel pump. It's died twice in the driveway and once in the middle of NoWhere, Ohio. The dealership told her that it's possible the gas tank cover is corroding and somehow causing a problem with the fuel pump. I don't know if they mean that corroded bits are getting sucked into the pump or what. Apparently, the pump was getting current but just not moving the gas. Does this sound plausible? She didn't have to pay but her peace of mind is shot. Is there a TSB out on fuel pumps and/or is this a known problem? Thanks kaboomie |
Re: 2000 Elantra fuel pump issues
There's no TSB about this, but I've seen vehicles where some part of the
fuel tank or filler neck was rusting, causing fuel pump failure. I got nailed on this a couple times myself. Replace the fuel pump. Failure again a couple weeks later. Eventually, I figured out that the characteristic fuel pump whine was definitely a higher pitch if there was a rusting issue. The dealer's assessment is plausible. |

Is there anything that she or the dealership can do to prevent this from happening again? kaboomie |

Re: 2000 Elantra fuel pump issues
Thoroughly clean or replace the tank and replace whatever components are
rusting. This won't be cheap. |

Re: 2000 Elantra fuel pump issues
My sister's 99 Elantra has a similar problem. The only thing I did was clear out
the contacts to the fuel pump and that took car of the problem.
