2000 Elantra fuel pump issues

**Hi everyone.

A co-worker of mine has a 2000 Elantra that's on its 3rd fuel pump.
It's died twice in the driveway and once in the middle of NoWhere,
Ohio. The dealership told her that it's possible the gas tank cover is
corroding and somehow causing a problem with the fuel pump. I don't
know if they mean that corroded bits are getting sucked into the pump
or what. Apparently, the pump was getting current but just not moving
the gas.

Does this sound plausible? She didn't have to pay but her peace of
mind is shot. Is there a TSB out on fuel pumps and/or is this a known
problem?

Thanks

kaboomie
