2000 sonata plugs replacement - help/advice/website?
 

Hello,

Another question for this Sonata - it's a 2000 with about 100k miles on it.
My friend & I are going to change out plugs and I'm seeing that it looks
like the intake manifold has to come off to get the rear 3 plugs out. Any
advice or information or even a website you'd care to point me to to help
with this??

Allocate a few hours to do it, it's not a fast process. You'll need
to remove the intake pipe, the throttle body, and then the upper
intake manifold before you can get to the rear valve cover. Verify
the gap on each plug before installing. If you don't have a torque
wrench, tighten each plug by hand and then add an additional 3/8
rotation with a wrench. When reinstalling everything, make sure you
replace any gaskets that are in poor condition.

Oh, and put a large pan under the car so you don't leak coolant and
fuel all over the place.

Thanks so much Jason! We did as you said and it was actually not too bad at
all. We replaced all plugs with no problem. Also cleaned out the throttle
body w/spray cleaner rated for fuel injected engines. All went well and
now... STILL have the hesitation problem! What to do?

Once it's warmed up - it still "stumbles" upon acceleration. It can even
"kill" sometimes. Has anyone heard of this or experienced it and if so,
what was your solution? I realize we can continue replacing parts - fuel
filter, wires, mass air flow sensor (or it's equivalent) but I'd rather have
someone who has already solved the same problem.

Anyone???

Glad the plug replacement went well. I'm not sure what might be
causing your problem. Are you throwing a CEL? If so, you can get it
read for free at any AutoZone and then we'll have a better idea of how
to go about fixing it.

Because you said that it lags when you hit the accelerator I'd have to
guess that you're not getting enough fuel (clogged/bad injector or
fuel filter). The fuel filter is a cheap, easy fix. The injectors
are not.

Thanks again Jason! Yes, there is a CEL coming on - the owner didn't tell
me that before we proceeded to pull the intake off & change out the
plugs...! ...and I didn't think to ask before either... pppfffffft! ;-) I
guess I deserve that for not thinking to ask first. Anyhew, I told him to
take it by an AutoZone and will wait to hear back on the code.
