2001 Elantra Parking Lights stay on

~30000 mile 2001 Elantra

I noticed this evening that my parking lights and dash lights are on.
The car has been sitting in my garage since Friday night. When I saw
the parking lights on I tried to start the car and it started right up
(no issues).

I noticed Phil posted the same issue 3 years ago but I didn't see any
solution or couse. Anyone know what I could look at or what may be
causing the issue?

It's possible the light switch is shorted.

I think I've also seen one car where there was a wire shorted to the metal
panel behind the lower left dash, grounding the parking lamp relay.

I appreciate the response.

If either of these are the case and not being a very handy car guy,
any idea what this will cost me to get fixed?

Probably looking at $200 to $300 for the switch (rough estimate). If it's
a wiring issue, it'll depend on how long it takes to locate the problem.

Re: 2001 Elantra Parking Lights stay on

Here's a wild hunch:
My new Sonata 2007 parking lights stayed on the other day because of the following sequence:

I always leave my lights on all the time but not in the auto mode (which responds to daylight).
I turned off ignition but forgot to take keys out of car. A few hours later I noticed the lights were still on so I entered thru
the passenger door and removed the key.
An hour later the lights were still on. If this had happened and I removed the key from dirver's door the lights will go off.

Normally when I leave lights switch on, when I turn off ignition, remove key and exit, the lights go off in a few seconds.

For those that may not have caught the reasoning, Ned's lamps stayed on
because he removed the key from the ignition but failed to open the
driver's door.
